When we were in Barcelona we travelled by train. I am not sure how long it would take, but not more than a few hours. We just went from Barcelona up the coast to a little town called Sitges, it was beautiful. Enjoy your trip.

Another way that is slightly cheaper is by train. There is a high speed train (called ALTARIA) from Madrid (Atocha Station) till Barcelona. It will take you about 4hrs45 min.
I always like travelling by train, you see a lot of the landscape, and you can move around. If you take first class they provide you with free drinks (ask for them) and a lunch.
