Village Idiot asked:
I’m planning a trip to Central & Eastern Europe next year. I’m hoping to fly into Vienna and travel by rail to Budapest, Krakow and Berlin. Any advise on whether it’s better to get a rail pass or to buy point-to-point tickets ? As the distances are quite long, I’d prefer to travel by sleeper train. Does railpass cover sleeper trains ? I also welcome any other advise or suggestions like hostels or (inexpensive!) things to see and do. I’m planning a 3-week trip.

get a rail pass they have ones that are good for unlimited travel for a set period of time. the restriction is that you can not travel same route in a row. meaning you cant go from berlin to paris and paris to belin then berlin to paris.
If i remember correctly (been a while since i have done this) but you pay an additional fee to get a sleeper at time of actual leg of journey.

Check at and
These are the websites of the German and the Austrian national railways respectively. They list several options available for travelers but watch out….some offers are valid only for tourists outside Europe.
Usually, these websites will offer cheap fares for particular trains on select dates and these will work out more economical as compared to buying a pass which might not be fully utilized by you.
