Congratulations, Amsterdam is one of the greatest cities on earth. It always makes me think of the old Clint Eastwood movie, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Its a city with all three in equal parts. Be aware that there are many beautiful women for rent in Amsterdam. These range from the girls in the windows in the red light district, to the massage girls, to the higher priced escorts. You should know that 7% of these are HIV positive. There is an excellent article in Wikipedia on prostitution in the Netherlands and Amsterdam in particular.
Having covered the rental ladies, you may want to know where the local people hang out. There are two beautiful plazas with open air cafes and street entertainment, these are Leidseplein and Rembrandtsplatz. These are lively venues in the evenings, especially on the weekend with folks meeting friends and having a good time. During the day, young travelers tend to hang out by Central Station or Dam Square. For a list of clubs in Amsterdam, visit a newsstand and pick up a copy of “Time Out Amsterdam.” It is also available on line and I’ve included the URL below.
For a chance to meet local folks and have a genuine good conversation, go to one of the great little community bars that are sprinkled throughout the city. Sit down, keep quite for awhile, and have a couple of bier. Let yourself be drawn into the conversation and you’ll enjoy it a lot.
The Dutch women are often tall, blonde, and have a classic elegance. They also can quickly put you in your place with a look that will make you feel like a foolish school boy. They do not find it amusing that you might confuse those who work in the trade for a living with those who do not.
You’ll be there a bit early in the summer, but its well worth the day trip to the beach at Zandvoort. It is topless and for an American, mind blowing. I took my son there when he was 17 and after walking the sand for a half an hour he looked at me and said “we’ve got a lot of hang ups in America, don’t we?”

I just got back from amsterdam a few weeks ago, i noticed the women there are very independent and self centered, if you really want to meet ladies dont go to the red light district, it is interesting to see, but unless you have one thing in mind they dont talk to you. I personally went to alot of the local bars and met a ton of people from outside holland, they were all pretty cool.
I spent half of my trip in belguim though and enjoyed it there much much better. I was in brussels and gent and the local people there are totally awesome, and truthfully much much better looking there in holland. Its really not that far, about a 3 hour train ride from amsterdam to brussels. thats just my suggestion.

Most action / activity in meeting people is around the “plein” places.
Rembrandsplein
Leidseplein etc.
Just find a bar with an atmosphere that you like, and chances are good you`ll meet some like minded people there.
