Where can I get a cheap flight, and where’s a cheap place to stay? How do I do Amsterdam on the super cheap while still being SAFE?

The best airline to fly would be KLM Airlines. There are plenty of hostels all throuout Amsterdam for Touring On A Dime folks, and if your budget can manage it, I recommend a bed and breakfast. The Dutch are exceptionally friendly to tourists, and it is a neat experience to room with the locals. You can be safe in Amsterdam, just remember that the Red Light District can be scarry after about 1am. The drug laws in the Netherlands are quite lax, and if the smell of smoking Marijuana offends you, I would walk around with a plugged nose, as it is quite prevalent there. The best mode of transportation there is by local bus, or bicycle. And, if you ride a bike, you’ll really fit in with the locals, as they all seem to ride bikes there. In fact, other than for when I was in mainland China, I had never seen so many bicyclists as I have in Amsterdam. Be sure to keep an umbrella handy, as it rains there frequently, and keep your camera with you. The Dutch just love posing for photos, and the bridges (and there are lots of them to choose from), are lovely photo op’s.

This really depends on where you are leaving from. Are you flying from NYC, Chicago, Detroit, San Fran or London? Intercontinentally I always look to the big sites:
From within Europe:
Once there I would use either hotels.com (which could put together a good package combo with your flight, I stayed in a decent hotel in London for 90 bucks a night) or you can go with a hostel, which vary, but often have reviews and detailed descriptions. The best 3 sites I’ve found for those would be.
These sites will let you know to expect 2-3-4 or 20 person rooms, single sex or co-ed, ect….
While there I didn’t find it that expensive. Street performers, 12 bucks for the heineken tour, a little something for the anne frank house, great walking site seeing, some money for drinking but nothing out the ordinary….Good luck with the Dutch.

Depends where you come from.
If you fly from within Europe, than it’s best to take the budget airlines like Easy Jet or Air Berlin… it’ll cost you about $30,- for a single trip
It’s cheapest to stay in youth hostels e.g. backpackers

I reccomend this indipendent website for your search:
Hostel:
Flight:
And try for Local Advise.
They offer just a list of resource where you can find addresses and you can do on you own.
I personally used both on my OZ trip.
