Venus asked:
Any idea whether we can expect to find a decent double room in central Amsterdam if we don’t pre-book? I’ve heard you can get a better deal if you book direct with the hotel when you’re there. We’re hoping to go on Friday for three nights.
Thanks

I would personally book in advance if you want a double, but there are an awful lot of hotels in central Amsterdam so you would probably find something. It just means you spend half a day looking for accommodation when you could be out enjoying your hols !!

Book in advance otherwise you’ll get riped off. But weekends are always higher priced over here.

When we arrived at the airport there is a Tourist Information Desk, they arranged accomodation for us and it was affordable and nice. Took all the hassle away from us also they supplied detailed map of how to find it. Have fun Amsterdam!

when i went with my friend a few years ago we just turned up there. near the railway station there is a booth that deals in just finding accomadation. most people when they speak to the person in the booth specify they want a central location and they inevitably are given some recommendations. we weren’t too bothered if it was a bit further out (usually quieter i guess) and they found us some japanese run 5 star hotel about 25-30 mins walk from the very centre of amsterdam. got an excellent price and was a great place. much cheaper than any hotels we saw prior to arriving. the only thing i would say is just make sure there are no major conventions on when you want to go, otherwise you will have to book accomadation many, many months in advance. otherwise i think you are better to just arrive and find somewhere then - you will get a much better deal imo

you could go and hope for the best, but I think you would be gutted it you couldn’t find any where, or found somewhere and it was either miles away from the centre or in a really dodgy place. At least if you book before, you will be able to choose the location, see pictures of the accommodation and read on line reviews, and the best part, you can compare prices so you can find the best quality for the cheapest prices. (equalling-more spending money, which is always a good thang!)
That’s what I did, and the place was great. When I find the link I used, I will post it for you. Have fun anyway Hun. X

When looking at hotel/airline deals on line…..we were about to book one hotel…and it booked up while we were thinking about it(mind you this was no more than 2 or 3 min.)……..My point telling you this is………..Think how bad it is going to suck wasting hours of your trip looking for a hotel…..instead shop for one in your PJ’s……..we were able to find him one with his own bath(a rare thing over there……) a small fridge….and a nice little view………for the hotel and airline fare it was around $900..For a 4 night stay………….By the way….if this is your first time going………don’t pack a Huge suitcase….the stairs are usually pretty narrow……and be sure to break in a good pair of walking shoes because that is “THE” mode of transportation over there….that or bicycle……..Have a great trip…..this is his 3rd time going…..And he is like a giggle school girl about his up coming October trip.
