Overnight train Budapest - Krakow?
krakow travel
La Comtesse asked:

My partner and I have booked to spend five days in Budapest (Hungary), and five in Krakow (Poland) in early February, and are planning on travelling between the two cities on an overnight rail service.

I’ve done this itinerary four times before on my own, within the last decade. Each time I’ve taken the same train which leaves Budapest in early evening and arrives in Krakow at dawn the next day. However, I’m having trouble finding an operator who sells tickets for the service or even one who can confirm that it still runs. Raileurope and German Rail say they don’t have it on their timetables at all, the Hungarian network is just unhelpful generally.

Anyone taken the above train recently? Or aware of other useful rail websites where timetables can be viewed/bookings made? I’m not fussy about only being able to book once in Hungary as I’ve done that before.
Thanks muchly in advance.
My relationship and general social reputation are hanging on this a bit - I live with Mr Unadventurous, and he’s very worried at the idea of going abroad whilst still not being totally sure of absolutely every tiny detail. It would be just useful to be able to confirm that the service I’ve fairly guaranteed will run, still exits!

You might want to ask this question at

Bill McAlpin and GyuriFT would probably consider it a question of personal honour to find out what you need to know. GyuriFT is Hungarian, drop him line through VT mail.

EDIT: I think I know why you could not find it at bahn.de - you left the date at the default (”today”) when you looked yesterday. Since yesterday was New Years it did not run and thus didn’t show up. Also the train is not actually a train, it is a sleeping car attached to other trains. It runs as EN 376 until Breclav, after that as R 202 until Bohumin, then as R 201 to Zebrzydowice and finally as D 201 to Krakow.

BTW I would like to know the price for this train ticket - I’m planning something similar.
