If your flying into ataturk theres a airport train line that goes to the bus station from there you can get a bus at anytime of day that will take you directly to bursa bus station takes around 4-5 hours and half way your bus will get onto a water ferry that only takes 20mins or so though
If you are changing planes, you may choose to fly, which will be easier than going to the bus station and finding the right bus.
If you are leaving from the city itself, going to the airport may take as much as a bus trip. In this case, taking the bus or the ferry would be easier.
Plane is the fastest of course, but when you estimate the time you will spend at the airport, it is more logical to take a fast ferry to Mudanya and then take a bus, taxi etc. to Bursa. It will take around two hours.
No commercial flights available to Bursa from Istanbul
depending on your starting point in Istanbul,
a) you can either take a bus
(it’s fastest and cheapest if you’re departing from the Asian side of Istanbul)
or
b) go by the fast ferry (change in Mudanya) from Yenikapi (European side) but this one is at 07:00 AM and there’s only one service in a day

fast ferry can be delayed quite a while in this season because of the storms in the Marmara sea. So I suggest you to take a bus

Do it the Ottoman way, by carriage.

Well the true Ottoman way is by flying (rug) carpet.
But these days, and trust me I have been checkinig it out. The best way is by bus.
There is a small airport but unless you have a small plane or know people.
