The best way to travel from London to Paris is by the train. It takes you under the English channel chunnel and you get to see the country side which is absolutely beautiful at times. You do pass through some industrial once in France but it is very nice trip and not real expensive. Also about 2 hours travel time from London to Paris.

Besides the Eurostar train between London and Paris, there are discount airlines in Europe that operate unlike the discount airlines in the US. Airlines like EasyJet and RyanAir sell incredibly deeply discounted tickets to the first passengers to make a reservation on a flight. As the flight fills, the price goes up. In July 2005, three of us flew from London (Gatwick) to Toulouse, France for less than $200. The downside is that the discounters typically fly from/to the more obscure airports.

You might also want to consider flying one way into a beautiful French city like Nimes, Carcassonne, Nice, or Marseille and spend a little time there before taking the train up to Paris, and then later back to London.

Anyway, I recommend that you look into the train, but give the airlines a look, too.

    Depends.

London to Paris round-trip via train is about $300 in May. London (Heathrow) to Paris (Charles DeGaulle) is about $200 round-trip by plane for the same dates. You should also look at low-cost airlines like RyanAir.

It does depend on where exactly you plan to go. Both primary international airports in London (Gatwick & Heathrow) and Charles DeGaulle airport in Paris are a LONG way from downtown. It will cost about the same (or maybe more) as taking the train (train stations are downtown) if you are not comfortable using public transit and have to get to/from the airport (for example) by taxi.

Do some research based on what parts of Paris & London you want to visit, and then decide.
