I’m going to London for 1 week. What’s the cheapest way to travel around? Oyster Card? Someone give more info?

IShotTheSheriff asked:

I’ll be with a friend, and we’d like to travel around London all day, that’s what we’re gonna do basically. Plus, we stay in a place in Middlesex. Is there any card that can work for 7 days and allow us to travel from Middlesex to London, and to go around to see the city?
Okay, so the Travel Card seems good. It says that I can also use National Rail too, does that mean I won’t have to pay to go to Oxford or Cambridge? I’d like to spend a day there.

To decide the cheapest method of travelling you really need to get out a spreadsheet and enter every journey that you plan to make. It’s bloody ridiculous but it’s true. You may well find that a one week travelcard will work out cheaper than an Oyster Card. The above two links should help. You might also consider factoring in whether you are likely to lose your ticket, leave it back where you stay or only find it after you’ve had to purchase another. And bear in mind that buses sometimes terminate their journey in the middle of a route but will not refund your money when they do so. You have to either walk or pay again.

Depends where in Middlesex you are staying - provided you are within the boundary of zone 6 you can get a one week travelcard that will give you unlimited travel on tubes, trains, buses, trams and DLR’s.

go to to see a full map of the network and find out what zone your nearest station is in.

Depending on what zone you are in will depend on the cost of a travelcard. You can get a paper one or get it on Oyster - the benefit of oyster is that if you lose it you can get a replacement. You can also ‘pay as you go’ instead of putting on a travelcard but you cant use it on some trains.

go to to see how much it will cost

The other thing with oyster is that you can get discounted entry into some places like Madame Tussauds. You can also get a third off riverboat cruises - westminster to Richmond is about £7 and a lovely day out if it aint raining!

    Enjoy your stay!

In answering your second question, you are only allowed to use National Rail in the zones that you bought your oyster card for. You would have to pay extra to go to Oxford, etc. The good news is you can buy a young persons railcard if you are under 25 and get further discounts.

just one piece of advce if you travel outside London buy return tickets and tell the operator the exact time when you are coming back. The return ticket might cost you just 1 pound.

And if you jave to choose between subway, bus and train. train is your choice!!!
